72 hours of travel from Europe …
We stand in the middle of the tropical jungle, that means 8000 plant species and 40°C.
1300 years ago you would stand in the middle of the Maya kingdom.

We were really fortunate to meet last 1000 guardians of the forest.
They are the last descendents of the Maya’s that never were conquered by the Spanish.
They call themselves the Hach Winik (which means in Maya: “ the real people” also known as the Lacandon).
The Lacandon people are thé sublime example of sustainable living …

5000 of the 10000 km² tropical rainforest has disappeared in Chiapas Mexico the last 50 years.
Forces that surround the last Maya’s threaten their very existence … Once the most precious forests on earth may disappear together with thousands of years of tradition and culture.
It is an unequal battle of 1000 against the outside world .
Even in the wet jungle maize is now 2 instead of 3 meters because of climate change. Country wide we can say it is getting 40% drier and 2°C hotter the last 6 months.
Global warming will endure, but that does not mean that 10% of all species have to become on the verge of extinction by 2050 as more land is used to raise crops and livestock?

What’s next?
….
The Lacandon are wise and highly organized people … let’s take an example on them!
They do not compete with capitalism (many of them don’t read or write)… as long as they have to life from they are happy … they do not need more money.
In the coming months we will start restoring the forest of a Lacandon family at Lacanja (The water snake). K’in reflects a thousand years of Maya experience he will run a pilot project with a mixture of peppertree, aceibo, chewing gum tree, balsam tree, and many others.
We would love to invite K’in Chankin Chanuk the 15th July in Swiss on the debate “restoration of degraded lands. The debate will be leaded by Luc Gnacadja Executive secretary of the UNO Convention against desertification (UNCDD)…

Let’s take an example to these masters of sustainability!
